First things first, Happy Holidays!! I hope everyone has a wonderful break and enjoys whatever festivities you celebrate! This has been such an amazing start to the school year, I am so lucky to have such a great class for my first year at Cranston. We spent our last week getting in the holiday spirit with caroling every day, and we even got a winter snow storm to help get us in the mood. With all this white stuff, I hope everyone is able to get outside this break for some good old fashioned winter fun.
Somehow we managed to squeeze in lots of opportunities to get some work done and finish up some of our units of study. We have completed our rocks and minerals unit in Science. Students did an awesome job of bringing all their learning together in their rock projects, which are now on display in our hallway. We also started a crystal experiment that we will wrap up in the new year. In January we will dive into our next Science unit, hearing and sound. In Math this week we took our very first look at multiplication, just to get our feet wet with this new concept. So far, I am impressed! We will continue working with multiplication in the new year, and continue working on problem solving. Although we are introducing a new concept, we will continue to also practice addition, subtraction and graphing throughout the year so that we keep our skills sharp! New spelling lists will go home the first week back, and we will pick up right where we left off with our literacy program. This will continue to include reading practice, a new class novel study, and writing practice. Please continue to read at home as often as possible over the winter break. In the new year we will be beginning our Social Studies inquiry into different countries around the world. These countries are: Peru, Tunisia, India and the Ukraine. If you or your family have any cool pictures, stories or artifacts relating to these countries please let me know! We will begin by looking at the geography of these countries, building off of our mapping work earlier this school year. We will also be looking at the celebrations and traditions of each country. This year has been a pleasure so far, and I am looking forward to what the rest of this school year has in store for our class! See you in 2018! First, a huge thank you to everyone who came to our christmas show last night, the kids put in a lot of work and it was great to see it all come together. Our week has been chaotic to say the least, but I am so grateful to have such a wonderful class who can be flexible and roll with the changes. Because of their awesomeness, we still managed to get quite a bit done in between rehearsals! We have been talking about different types of words and parts of speech in writing. So far we have talked about nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. To help us develop our understanding of these words we have been using mad lib activities. This week we worked with holiday themed mad libs and the kids had a lot of fun creating silly stories. We also used this understanding to create haikus this week. A Japanese form of poetry, Haikus use syllables to create short, 3 lined poems about different topics. Given the topic of winter, everyone created their own. I was impressed with the creativity that many showed. They will be on display in the hallway in the new year along with out winter art. We are still working away at our science projects. We painted our rocks using water color this week and we also wrote creative titles for our projects. Next week we will finally bring everything together and finish our projects. These will also be on display in the hallway in the new year. Our Christmas bag initiative wrapped up this week. We decorated bags with our Kindergarten buddy class (our first get together of the year!) and filled our bags with all the goodies we brought in. The bags have been sent off to the schools in need. Thank you to everyone who helped make this initiative possible. We ended our week with the last Club Friday for this round of clubs. Students will start new clubs in January. Spelling tests (finally) came home today. As mentioned last week, there will be no new words until the new year. Please note that report cards come home next Thursday, and there is no school for students on Friday so Thursday will be their last day of classes for 2017! I hope everyone has a great weekend! Ms.Brett I can't believe there are only two weeks until the holidays! We are all busy getting ready for our Christmas concert next week. I have to say, our class is sounding amazing, I can't for you all to hear them perform next week! Just a reminder, if you aren't able to come please send back your tickets so that they can be redistributed to families needing extra tickets. We have also been spending some time preparing our gift bags for other students. This week we made Christmas cards and next week we will decorate gift bags.
This week we worked on a winter art piece. We learned about tint and shade, and we used tint to create a beautiful winter landscape. Next week we will work on some writing to accompany it. We continue to work on our rock projects, fingers crossed we can get them done before the holidays! Our literacy centers and math centers continued this week. We are also still reading Harry Potter as a class, and continue to work on making connections and predictions with the book as well as visualizing using the descriptive language from the book. We did not do our words their way test yesterday, we will do it on Monday. Please note that I will not be sending home new words next week, we will take a holiday break and resume in the new year. Next week will be a crazy one with rehearsals throughout the week, matinee performances and evening shows. Please see the weekly sent out by the school for more information regarding the performances. Students are asked to wear black, white, red and or green (any combination of those is fine). If anyone is going to be leaving early for the holiday break please let me know so we can arrange for report cards to be sent home. Upcoming dates: December 14 Christmas Concert 1pm (no tickets required), 6:30 pm (tickets required) December 15 Club Friday December 20 Fun Lunch December 21 Last day for students Report cards go home January 9 Students back in Enjoy your long weekend! Ms.Brett As I am writing this some Cranston elves are busy decorating our school for the holiday season. Speaking of Christmas, today I have sent home something special. This year, Cranston students and staff have decided to support other schools’ students who may not be as fortunate as us by providing them with a Christmas gift bag. I have sent home a large ziplock freezer bag with a list inside it. The list has required items and other ideas for the Christmas bag for a student. We are requesting that spending between $15-20 (please do not exceed $20 as we want to ensure all students are receiving approximately the same amount). All items must be new. Examples of Required Items: Travel size shampoo, tooth brush, tooth paste, bar of soap, deodorant, toque Other Ideas: gloves, small toys, bouncy balls, pencils, bracelets, candy, play dough, no toy weapons Participation in this initiative is voluntary. Please return THE BAG and PAPER LIST to the school by Wednesday, December 6. All items must be able to fit in the Ziplock bag provided. Students and teachers will begin the process of decorating gift bags and making cards after that date. Gift bags will be delivered to three CBE schools on December 12. Other exciting happenings in room 74 this week..
December will be a whirlwind I am sure, but I am looking forward to a festive and fun month for our class. I hope everyone enjoys their weekends! Ms.Brett Try this at home!
