I really can't believe we are at the end of September already. This year is flying by!
Room 74 has been busy diving into our science unit on rocks and minerals, beginning to explore the social studies concept of quality of life, and practicing sharing our thinking in math. Students were introduced to the Words Their Way spelling program this week, and they will be starting to work with words at their level next week. There will not be formal spelling tests, but students will be working with their words throughout the week doing various activities. Next week we are going to focus in on place value in Math and continue developing a strong foundation of number sense. This week we trained for and ran the Terry Fox run as a whole school. We also spent time talking about Terry Fox, his legacy, and why he is a Canadian hero. Our class also wrote about whether they thought Terry Fox was a superhero or not. It was very interesting to read about their reasons for choosing yes or no! Check blue communication folders for: - TWAS books, please read, write a note back if you would like, and return next week - Mathletics log in information. Please store this somewhere at home. Students are welcome to log in at home and practice their math skills. - Walking field trip letter. This letter is to inform parents about potential walking field trips that we may go on this year. I will notify you by email before we do any of these trips. Upcoming Important Dates: October 4 - Picture Day (the real on this time) October 9 - Thanksgiving Day - NO SCHOOL October 11 - Fun lunch October 13 - Club Friday October 16 - PD Day - NO SCHOOL October 19 - Literacy Night I hope everyone has a great weekend! Ms.Brett We have been busy getting more familiar with routines and expectations in room 74 this week. Our class has been building reading stamina during our DEAR time (drop everything and read) and our writing stamina with a couple of longer writing tasks. In math we have been focusing on number sense and we have begun to explore our social studies topic of rights and responsibilities. Here is what room 74 has to say about rights and responsibilities: "A right is something that the law says you can have or do" - SM " A responsibility is something that is your job" -AF "Its your responsibility to keep track of your things" - AH " If i bring a book to read to the whole class and I bring it outside at recess I would be responsible for that book" -BC "Its your right to go to school" - MW " Its your responsibility in school to put the pencils away after you're done with them" - JG " It's your right to have enough food" - AH " Its your right to drink clean water and its your responsibility to be kind to other people" - MA " Its your right to be safe" - AF " Its your responsibility to look both ways when you cross the street" - LC "it's your right to be a kid, to be playful and all that stuff" -AH "Its responsible to go to your friends house if no one is home after school" -SB "It is responsible to go to the washroom when you need to" -AS " It is your responsibility to put your shoes away" - CE " It is your right to feel good" - KN " Your responsibility is to listen to parents and adults that you know." -AF Other important information: - TWAS books are coming home in the blue communication folders. Read and return on Monday. Parents feel free to write your child a note back in their TWAS books, you can ask questions or make comments about their week :) - Volunteer forms went home yesterday, please fill out and return if you would like to volunteer this year. - Our Terry Fox run is next week on Sept 28. We will be running as a school from 1-2 pm. Families are welcome to come to cheer us on or join in our run. If the weather is not good, students will do their run in their normal gym class. We have been talking about Terry Fox at school and gym classes have set class goals for their run. We will be collecting "Twoonies for Terry" again this year, to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation. Students can bring their twoonies to office to put in the glass donation jar. I am looking forward to seeing everyone tonight and tomorrow for meet the teacher! Ms.Brett Room 74 has had an awesome second week of grade 3. This week we learned about mindfulness and how we can be mindful at school. Here are some of our ideas...
"We can be kind to everyone" - CE "We can help others when we notice they need help" -MW "We can be careful of what we are doing and what we are touching" -AS "We can speak kindly to others" -QS "We can draw a picture to calm down and help us focus" - JG "Be respectful of others" - MB "Ask people to play with us who don't have someone to play with" - MA "We can work quietly" - LC " Don't rush yourself, always take your time" -BC "Being quiet and not distracting other people" -SM "Using putty to stop all the silliness in our brains and make us realize the world around us and start working" -KN " Calm down our brains taking 5 deep breaths in" - LC "Using your manners" - AF "Looking both ways when you cross the street" -LC "Walking across the street at the crosswalk" - SM "Be aware of your surroundings and walk in the hallways and classroom" - KN "Be mindful of when there is a fire drill you should stay calm" -MA "Be mindful or Mrs. Aris, the library teacher, because if you just look at a book and don't tell anyone you are just hiding it and not telling Mrs. Aris. You're not being mindful of the books" - AH "Being mindful when we are in gym, if you are really mad at someone you don't punch them you try to be mindful and calm down." -SB We are going to continue to talk about how we can be mindful of ourselves, of others and of our school. Our mindfulness practice will help us learn and work with our peers. Check our TWAS books for more about what we did this week! TWAS books are coming home today in student's blue communication folders. Please return them at the beginning of next week. There is no school next Friday for students. Meet the teacher will be taking place next week of Thursday and Friday. The conference manager for booking these is open and accessible through the school website. I am looking forward to meeting with all of you! I hope everyone has a great weekend, and to our friend traveling across the pond this weekend, safe travels! Ms.Brett We survived our first week of grade three!
So far, our favourite parts of grade three are... "using the bathroom sign out sheet" - SB "meeting our new teacher, Ms.Brett" - SM "having a new music teacher" - AF "trying D.E.A.R." - CZ "doing all sorts of writing" -AS "doing the art for our visual journals" - MW "trying out T.W.A.S." - CE "I really like the lanterns in our classroom" - BC "having fun and playing outside" - JG "singing the Cranston school anthem in music" - MB "snacktivity" - AA "learning about our brains" -LW "Ms.Brett reading us stories" -MA "brain booster" - LC "I kinda love games" - BT "boggle" -QS Blue communication folders will be coming home today. Inside are two important things: - T.W.A.S. book (This week at school) Our class will be writing in our TWAS books every week this school year. These books will come home on Fridays and are for parents to read. The purpose of TWAS is for students to practice writing, and for parents to be able to see how their child's writing is progressing as the year goes. Today was many student's first experience with TWAS and they were able to work fairly independently on it, which was excellent to see. As we work on our writing throughout the year you should begin to see changes in spelling, grammar, content and structure. These books need to be returned to school every Monday, so that students are able to write in them again. Please support students in ensuring that these are returned to school on time. - Scholastic book orders please return by Friday, Sept.15 if you would like to purchase anything. It has been a busy but wonderful first week and I have truly enjoyed getting to know your children. I can tell this is going to be a great group of kids, and I am looking forward to spending the year helping them learn and grow. I hope everyone has a great weekend! Ms.Brett Hello everyone!
School begins on Tuesday September 5, 2017. The bell times have changed from last year so please make note of the new times:
The children will be entering and exiting the school via door 3 (the door located closest to the playground). I will meet them outside the first few days of school at our meeting spot. If you are picking up your child, please arrange a pick up spot away from the doors. If your child takes the bus to school, he/she will be exiting at the end of the day via the front door. I am looking forward to meeting everyone, see you on Tuesday! Ms. Brett |
